Obituary for Eleanor Swanker Pierce

Eleanor Swanker Pierce, 103 of Medina, Ohio passed away Saturday, May 26, 2018 at Brookdale South Medina.
She was born July 1, 1914 in Litchfield, OH to Clyde and Fannie (Buckingham) Bradley.
Eleanor was a 1932 graduate of Litchfield High School where she was Class President. She played violin in the orchestra, and lettered in Music, Debate, Art, Public Speaking, Baseball and Basketball. She was also selected to sing in the Ohio State Chorus. She excelled in Debating, and received firsts from all three judges in each debate she was in. This prompted her teacher to have her enter the County Oratorical Contest, where she placed first, and went on to receive honorable mention in the state.
Eleanor played French Horn in the Medina County Band under the direction of Henry Zuengler. The band was invited along with several other county bands in the state to play at one of the first Air Races at Cleveland Hopkins Airport, playing “El Capitan” which was composed and directed by John Phillip Sousa.
Eleanor was a member of Litchfield Congregational Church, where she sang and directed the choir. She was also a member of the Litchfield Grange and Order of Eastern Star. She organized the Parents Club in the early 1940’s, which later joined the PTA, and also the Litchfield Alumni Assoc. which first met in 1946.
She was an avid reader and enjoyed crossword puzzles, golfing, knitting, and caring for her home and family.
She is survived by her
Grandchildren: Brenda Botea Swanker, Donald Swanker, James (Alana) Swanker, Shelley (Thomas) Daming, John (Andrea) Swanker
Great-Grandchildren: Jarod and Jason Daming, Michael and Emily Botea, Matthew and Alex Swanker, Bryton McCrary, Amee Hadley, Leah Powers and Dustin Sarver.
She was preceded in death by her 1st husband E.E. (Dutch) Swanker in 1959, 2nd husband Ralph Pierce in 1985, son Roger in 2015, infant sister Flora Mae, brothers Raymond, Donald and Kenneth Bradley, and grandson Martin Swanker.
Funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 30, at 11:00 AM at the Parker Funeral Home, 210 Medina St., Lodi (330-948-1122).
Pastor James Ellison will officiate.
Burial will follow at Litchfield Cemetery.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 10:00 – 11:00 AM at the funeral home.
