Obituary for Phyllis V. Siman

Phyllis Virginia Grim Siman (Renaissance Woman) was born in Chatham, OH on July 3, 1921 – her father called her his ‘firecracker”. Phyllis was one of 11 children but her “families” extended way beyond those related by blood. She was grandma, sister, counselor, and friend to many.
Phyllis led an extremely full life and succeeded at anything she had a mind to try, always first a mother and wife, she was a gardener, business woman, seamstress, craftsman, amateur actress, florist, and cookie baker. She was a mentor to many, enthusiastically sharing these skills with anyone who showed an interest.
She was an avid historian. Later in her life she developed an interest in genealogy, and traced the family lineage far back to the Kings and Queens of England. She became a resource for many others and liked nothing better than receiving letters requesting assistance tracing their ancestors from people all over the country. She directed many to come home to Chatham and provided others with cemetery records and historical information from the Chatham Historical Society. She was a Matriarch of Chatham Community Church where she served many roles, including singing in the choir. She and her husband Kenny started the Apple Butter festival in their backyard which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2018. She was a charter life member of the Chatham Historical Society, a life member of the Chatham/Valley City VFW Auxiliary, James Fowler Chapter of the DAR, the Mayflower Society, several Historical Societies in New England, and charter member of the Chatham Garden Club. Phyllis also belonged to the Medina County Farm Bureau, Chatham Fire Belles Auxiliary, Extensions Homemakers, Mother Singers and was a 4-H Advisor and a Poll worker on the election board for many years.
Phyllis passed away peacefully at her home in Chatham OH, after a long and full life at the age of 97 years on May 7, 2019. She was predeceased by her husband Kenneth and two sons, Robert and Charlie, daughter-in-law Joyce and son-in-law Wendell Holloway. She is survived by daughters Charlotte (Thomas) Nesbett, Sally (Roger) Geiser, Judy Holloway and son Daniel (Diane) Siman. She had six grandchildren: Daryl Siman (Mike), Caleb, Isaac, Luke and Ethan Siman, and Corrine (Chris) Ballard. She was also blessed with three great grandchildren, Veronica, Thomas and Daniel Ballard.
Visitation will be Friday, May 10, 2019 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at Parker Funeral Home, 210 Medina St., Lodi (330-948-1122). A funeral service will be held Saturday, May 11, 2019 at 2 PM at Chatham Community Church (South church). Pastor Patty Humphress will officiate. Interment will follow at Chatham Cemetery. There will be a reception at the Chatham Memorial Hall following the burial.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Chatham Historical Society, Chatham Community Church or Chatham Fire and Rescue.
