Obituary for Leonard R. Barnhart

Leonard R. Barnhart, 89 of Chatham, OH passed away on Saturday, December 15, 2018. He was born in Lodi, Ohio, on September 10, 1929, to the late F. Reed and Edna M. (Williams) Barnhart, the third of four children.
Leonard was raised on a farm, and except for his time in the Air Force and some electronics training in New York, he stayed true to his roots. Leonard and his father ran Chicken’s Eye View Egg farm, with home and business egg routes in Cleveland as well as local stores and walk-in customers.
Leonard was a devoted husband and family man. Leonard was involved in his church and community in many ways, with his years in choir and quartet work, his time as Work Tour advisor for teens, and his years as a volunteer firefighter and EMT, retiring as Assistant Chief at Chatham Twp. Volunteer Fire Department taking much time—but giving him great joy. Leonard was a 4-H advisor for several years. He also spent many hours washing dishes at the Chatham V.F.W.’s pancake dinners—and visiting with friends.
Following his father’s dream, Leonard helped to open and then to run Hidden Lakes Campground. Leonard also worked over 20 years at Tru-Fit Products in Medina. He and Donna enjoyed traveling whenever possible. After his retirement and Donna’s loss, he worked for Cloverleaf Schools as an evening janitor, at the church as janitor, as a Logos volunteer at church, and as a Meals-on-Wheels volunteer, just to keep busy. Though he was a quiet, humble man who thought of himself as shy, he never hesitated to help anyone he could; once he got to know a person, he was gregarious and giving.
Leonard spent his later years traveling and visiting whenever possible with his dear friend Dorothy, and caring for his beloved dog, Miss Daisy.
Leonard will be greatly missed by his three children, Edna (Tim) Ridenbaugh, Roy (Claudia) Barnhart, and Nancy (Joe) D’avello; grandchildren Kevin (Amber) Ridenbaugh, Gwen (Cora) Barnhart, and Jackie Barnhart; great-grandchildren Kaleb and Khloe Ridenbaugh and Nathaniel Barnhart; as well as sisters Marybel Kobb and Norma (Mike) Johnson; and sisters-in-law LaDonna Barnhart, Evelyn Kindig, Lois Lindblom, brother-in-law Ron (Elaine) Norton; his special friend of many years, Dorothy Dapper; and many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews, and friends.
In addition to his parents, Leonard was preceded in death by his wife of 39 years, Donna (Norton) Barnhart, who died September 12, 1995; infant son, Lawrence; brother, Francis R. Barnhart; mother- and father-in-law, C. May and John A. Norton; brothers-in-law Gene Kobb, Donn Kindig, and Tom Lindblom, and several nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Friends may call Tuesday, Dec. 18, from 4:00 – 7:00 PM at Parker Funeral Home, 210 Medina St., Lodi, where the funeral will be held Wednesday Dec. 19, at 11:00 AM.
Rev. Diane Bell will officiate. Burial with military honors will follow at Chatham Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made in Leonard’s name to Lodi United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 3, Lodi, OH 44254 or Chatham Volunteer Fire Department, 6429 Kohli Dr., Spencer, OH 44275.
The family would like to give special thanks to the friends and associates of Brookdale Medina North for the dedication and care they provided for the past 4 ½ years, and to the Brookdale Hospice team who took extra special care of him.
